Business and Education Blogs

Did you know that many of the websites and blogs you visit every day are powered by the free WordPress application? Over the years, WordPress has grown from a great blogging tool to an amazing content management system (CMS) and some of the biggest brands in the world are using WordPress to represent themselves on the web.

WordPress is flexible, easy to use, and customizable so it’s no wonder it’s such a widely used web platform. Here are 10 incredible WordPress blogs that represent a variety of organizations, businesses and brands. Use these examples for creative ideas and inspiration for your own corporate blog.

News and Entertainment Blogs

MTV Newsroom. MTV truly puts WordPress to the test with its MTV Newsroom blog. This is a high-traffic site with a wide variety of content, including text, audio, and video. It’s updated frequently and uses a simple, traditional 3-column blog design.
Forbes Blogs. Forbes uses WordPress to power all of its blogs, and there are a lot of them. What makes the Forbes blogs stand out is how well the various blogs are integrated on the back-end. Despite its many online properties, Forbes is able to keep relevant content and links in front of visitors at all times.
AllThingsD. AllThingsD is one of the most popular technology news blogs around with continually breaking news content and great editorial posts. Scroll through the home page and see how much content is highlighted without cluttering the user experience. Writers are also highlighted, syndicated content from other sites gets its own spot, and ads are separated from the main content. It’s a great example of a news blog home page that works.
SearchEngineLand. SearchEngineLand is a great example of a blog that offers both free and premium content. Basic content is free and paid members can access premium content in SearchEngineLand’s Pro section. The site also does a great job of drawing attention to featured content in a highlighted bar beneath the top navigation menu items.
PlayStation Blog. The PlayStation Blog is a perfect example of how to present a lot of visual stimuli without overwhelming your audience. Visit a single post page and take a look at how unique the navigation bars and menus are configured. The comments are also visually appealing; this is an area of a blog that is often forgotten in the design process.
Spotify. Spotify is a cool way to listen to the music you love, and the Spotify website is just as cool. It’s built on WordPress and it offers some unique features to check out. For example, the status ticker that updates Spotify members on content related to its streaming music service is excellent. In addition, the use of design, video, and two top-level navigation bars make it very easy to navigate the site.

Business and Education Blogs

Carnival Cruise Lines. The Carnival News blog is powered by WordPress, and it’s a great example of excellent design and navigation. Scroll through the home page and review the top navigation, secondary navigation, sidebar, and the footer. The content and links are placed strategically and everything works well from a navigational and aesthetic perspective. Blog articles include a variety of multi-media content such as videos, slideshows, and more. Carnival is using a variety of the features available through WordPress to create a great user experience.
Mozilla Blogs. Are you using Mozilla Firefox to browse this article? Did you know that Mozilla uses WordPress to power its blogs? While the Mozilla Blog is fairly standard, theMozilla Labs blog looks great and is very easy to navigate. It’s a great site to get design inspiration.
Harvard UniversityIf WordPress is good enough for Harvard University, it should be good enough for most people, right? Take a look at these three Harvard blogs and websites to see how different they look from one another despite all being built on WordPress: Harvard Rugby Football Club, Neiman Journalism Lab, and Weblogs at Harvard Law (the last one is built on the WordPress-hosted application).
Boston UniversityBoston University is another college that uses WordPress for a variety of its websites and blogs. Like Harvard University, Boston University leverages the customization options that WordPress offers by making its sites look very different from one another although they all use the same core Boston University WordPress Flexi-Framework theme. The Boston University Study Abroad and Boston University Admissionssites look like traditional websites while the BU Today site looks like a news blog. This is a great example of how a single WordPress theme can be modified to achieve different goals.
